Two days in Istanbul is enough to walk the full Sultanahmet circuit from Hagia Sophia to Topkapi Palace, cross to the north bank at Galata Tower, and cover the Bosphorus waterfront from Beşiktaş to Ortaköy. The route averages 6-7 km of walking per day, with one ferry crossing on Day 2.

Day by day

Day 1: Old City: Sultanahmet and Eminönü

  • Hagia Sophia — 1.5 hr. Arrive at 8:15 AM. The ground floor is free (cover shoulders and remove shoes at the entrance); the upper gallery costs $32 with timed entry and contains the original Byzantine mosaics — book at sultanahmetmosque.gov.tr before your trip.
  • Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) — 45 min. Free entry. The mosque closes to non-worshippers during the five daily prayer windows; the schedule is posted on a board at the north gate.
  • Basilica Cistern — 1 hr. $4.25 entry. Book online at yerebatan.com to skip the queue. The underground Roman reservoir holds 336 columns across 9,800 sq meters; dim lighting and cool air make it the lowest-temperature stop in Sultanahmet.
  • Rest valve — Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi, Divan Yolu Caddesi — 45 min. A lokanta serving köfte (spiced lamb patties) and red lentil soup from the same address since 1920. Expect to pay $4-7 per person.
  • Topkapi Palace — 2.5 hr. $15-18 entry; $10 Harem add-on (timed slots). Buy tickets at muze.gov.tr before arriving. Walk through the second and third courtyards first, then the Harem, to sequence the architecture correctly.
  • Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) — 45 min. Free entry. Vendors on the outer perimeter ring of the bazaar sell at 20-30% lower prices than those inside the main hall.
  • Eminönü waterfront and Galata Bridge lower deck — 1 hr. The lower deck is lined with fishing rods and tea sellers; the balık ekmek stall 50 m west of the moored boats charges $3-4 and has a shorter queue than the boats.
  • Total: ~6 km walking; 0 transit segments.

Day 2: Galata, Beyoğlu, and the Bosphorus Shore

  • Galata Tower — 1 hr. $27 entry. Arrive at 8:30 AM opening to have the observation deck to yourself before the first guided groups arrive around 9am.
  • Walk from Karaköy up through Galata streets to Tünel — 45 min. The steep lanes hold original 19th-century apartment buildings and several independent coffee roasters; the incline is consistent — your calves will feel the last two blocks.
  • Istiklal Avenue from Tünel to Taksim Square — 1 hr. The Pera Museum on Meşrutiyet Caddesi (one block west of Istiklal) costs $8 and holds the Osman Hamdi Bey painting collection if you want a detour.
  • Rest valve — börek and tea at any fırın (bakery) in Beyoğlu — 45 min. A cheese-filled börek and a glass of tea costs $2-4. The bakeries between Galatasaray Square and Taksim are cheaper than the cafes on Istiklal.
  • Ferry from Eminönü to Beşiktaş — 20 min. $0.80 with Istanbulkart. The regular commuter ferry crosses the lower Bosphorus and gives an open-water view of the city skyline unavailable from land.
  • Walk along the Bosphorus shore from Beşiktaş to Ortaköy — 1 hr. The waterfront path passes the Çırağan Palace exterior, now a hotel; the facade is the only 19th-century Ottoman palace still visible from the water.
  • Ortaköy waterfront: Büyük Mecidiye Mosque exterior and kumpir — 1.5 hr. Kumpir is a baked potato piled at the vendor's counter with whatever fillings you choose; $4-6. The mosque stands at the water's edge and is free to visit outside prayer times.
  • T1 tram or bus 25E from Kabataş back to Sultanahmet — 25-30 min. $0.80 with Istanbulkart.
  • Total: ~7 km walking; 1 ferry, 1 tram segment.
Traveller Tips
  • Load your Istanbulkart at the airport the moment you land; the M11 metro to the city accepts only the card, not cash.
  • Day 1 is entirely on foot with zero transit. Day 2 uses one ferry and one tram — both with the same Istanbulkart.
  • Book both the Hagia Sophia upper gallery (sultanahmetmosque.gov.tr) and Topkapi Palace (muze.gov.tr) before leaving home; both sell out by late morning in peak season.
  • The Galata Tower and Basilica Cistern are the only two sights with meaningful queues outside of Hagia Sophia and Topkapi. Arriving at each within the first 30 min of opening eliminates both queues.
  • The Blue Mosque is free and rarely queued, but you cannot enter during prayer times. The prayer gap between morning and midday prayer is the longest and most reliable window.
