Five days in Istanbul is enough to cover the Old City, both European bank neighborhoods, the Asian side, an island day trip, and the Byzantine-era neighborhoods of Balat and Fener without compressing any visit. The route averages 6-8 km of walking or cycling per day, with no day requiring more than two transit connections.
Day by day
Day 1: Old City: Sultanahmet and Eminönü
- Hagia Sophia — 1.5 hr. Arrive at 8:15 AM. Ground floor free (cover shoulders and remove shoes); upper gallery $32 with timed entry, booked in advance at sultanahmetmosque.gov.tr.
- Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) — 45 min. Free entry. Closed to visitors during the five daily prayer windows; schedule posted at the north gate.
- Basilica Cistern — 1 hr. $4.25 entry. Book online at yerebatan.com to skip the walk-up queue. The underground reservoir holds 336 columns across 9,800 sq meters.

- Topkapi Palace — 2.5 hr. $15-18 palace entry; $10 Harem add-on with timed slot. Book at muze.gov.tr. Follow the second and third courtyards before the Harem to sequence the architecture correctly.
- Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) — 45 min. Free entry. Outer-ring vendors undercut the main hall by 20-30%.
- Eminönü waterfront and Galata Bridge lower deck — 1 hr. Balık ekmek from the stall 50 m west of the moored boats; $3-4.
- Total: ~6 km walking; 0 transit segments.
Day 2: Galata, Beyoğlu, and the Bosphorus Shore
- Galata Tower — 1 hr. $27 entry. Arrive at 8:30 AM opening for an unobstructed deck before guided groups arrive around 9am.
- Walk from Karaköy up through Galata streets to Tünel — 45 min. Steep 19th-century lanes with original apartment buildings and independent coffee roasters.
- Istiklal Avenue from Tünel to Taksim Square — 1 hr. The Pera Museum on Meşrutiyet Caddesi costs $8 and holds the Osman Hamdi Bey paintings collection.
- Rest valve — börek and tea at any fırın (bakery) in Beyoğlu — 45 min. $2-4. Bakeries between Galatasaray Square and Taksim are cheaper than the cafes on Istiklal.
- Ferry from Eminönü to Beşiktaş — 20 min. $0.80 Istanbulkart. Commuter ferry with open-water Bosphorus crossing.
- Walk along the Bosphorus shore from Beşiktaş to Ortaköy — 1 hr. The path passes the Çırağan Palace facade — the only 19th-century Ottoman palace still visible from the water.
- Ortaköy waterfront and kumpir — 1.5 hr. Kumpir (stuffed baked potato, loaded at the vendor's counter) $4-6. Büyük Mecidiye Mosque is free outside prayer times.
- T1 tram or bus 25E from Kabataş back to Sultanahmet — 25-30 min. $0.80 Istanbulkart.
- Total: ~7 km walking; 1 ferry, 1 tram segment.
Day 3: Asian Side: Kadıköy and the Grand Bazaar
- Ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy — 20 min. $0.80 Istanbulkart. Take the 9am departure to reach the market before the lunch crowd.
- Kadıköy Market (Tarihi Kadıköy Çarşısı) — 1.5 hr. Covered produce market on Muvakkıthane Caddesi with spice vendors, cheese sellers, and fresh pastry stalls. Prices are roughly half those on the European side.
- Moda neighborhood coastal walk — 1 hr. Art Nouveau apartment blocks along Moda Caddesi from the 1890s; the seaside path ends at a small pier with views toward the Princes' Islands.
- Rest valve — lunch at a lokanta on Muvakkıthane Caddesi — 45 min. Stuffed peppers or grilled lamb with pilav runs $5-8. These are the restaurants where local office workers eat.
- Ferry from Kadıköy back to Eminönü — 20 min. $0.80 Istanbulkart.
- Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) — 2 hr. Free entry from the Beyazıt Square gate. Kuyumcular Caddesi (Jewelers Street) has the original 1890 painted dome. Open until 7pm.
- Spice Bazaar outer streets — 45 min. The lanes between the bazaar and the ferry dock hold spice shops and bulk tea sellers at 30-40% lower prices than inside.
- Total: ~6 km walking; 2 ferries, 0 metro segments.
Day 4: Day Trip: Princes' Islands (Büyükada)
- Ferry from Kabataş to Büyükada — 1.5 hr. $0.80 Istanbulkart. Buy the ticket at the Kabataş dock machine. Weekday departures run at 8:30, 9:00, and 10:00 AM; the 9:00 AM is the best balance of light and crowd level.
- Rent a bicycle at the Büyükada dock — full day cycling. 250 TRY ($7) for the day. Motor vehicles are banned on the island; the north shore road loops the island in roughly 90 min of casual cycling.
- Aya Yorgi Monastery (St. George) on the island's hill — 1 hr. A 30-min ride or walk up the hill from the dock. The monastery grounds are open to visitors and give the widest view of the Sea of Marmara.
- Rest valve — lunch at a waterfront lokanta near the dock — 1.5 hr. Grilled fish and salad costs $10-15. Avoid the restaurants on the main square facing the dock; they charge double. The side streets have the correct prices.
- Explore the western residential streets by bicycle — 1 hr. The Victorian-era wooden mansions (köşk) on the west side of the island are the most complete surviving cluster of 19th-century wooden architecture in Istanbul.
- Ferry from Büyükada back to Kabataş — 1.5 hr. $0.80 Istanbulkart. Last affordable return service runs around 6pm; confirm the timetable at the dock before exploring.
- Total: ~8 km cycling on the island; 2 ferry crossings, 0 metro segments.
Day 5: Balat, Fener, Kariye, and Süleymaniye
- Dolmuş (shared minibus) from Eminönü to Balat — 20 min. $0.80. The yellow dolmuş minibuses depart from the Karaköy waterfront; ask the driver for Balat.
- Balat neighborhood walk — 1.5 hr. The Greek, Jewish, and Armenian quarter from the 19th century. The faded pastel-colored houses on Vodina Caddesi and Mürselpaşa Caddesi are the main draw; most survive in original condition because the district was too poor to redevelop.
- Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in Fener — 30 min. Courtyard and exterior. The Patriarchate has operated continuously from this compound since 1601 and covers 3,500 sq meters behind iron gates.
- Kariye Museum (Chora Church) — 1 hr. $11 entry. The 14th-century Byzantine mosaics cover more than 100 narrative panels across the narthex and inner narthex; the iconographic detail is the most complete surviving cycle anywhere in the world.
- Rest valve — lunch at a Balat kahvehane (coffee house) on Vodina Caddesi — 1 hr. Tea, börek, and lokum cost under $3 per person. These are neighborhood establishments with no English menu; point at whatever is on the tray.
- Süleymaniye Mosque complex — 1 hr. Free entry. Designed by Mimar Sinan in 1558, the complex covers 57,800 square meters; the terrace garden behind the mosque has the widest panorama of the Golden Horn in the city.
- Arasta Bazaar, near the Blue Mosque — 1.5 hr. A 17th-century market running 75 shops with lower prices and shorter queues than the Grand Bazaar. Open 9am-7pm; textile, ceramics, and leather goods are the main categories.
- Total: ~6 km walking; 1 dolmuş, 0 metro segments.
Traveller Tips
- Load your Istanbulkart at the airport; it covers all transit across all 5 days including the Princes' Islands ferry.
- Book Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia upper gallery, and Kariye Museum entry before arriving — all three have timed-entry systems that sell out in advance during peak season (April-October).
- Day 4 is the Princes' Islands day trip: bring cash for the bicycle rental (250 TRY) and the waterfront lunch. The island ATM charges a foreign card surcharge; withdraw from a city Garanti BBVA or İş Bankası machine on Day 3.
- The Balat-to-Süleymaniye route on Day 5 is entirely walkable without transit if you prefer; the walk from Balat to Süleymaniye is approximately 35 min through the old city wall neighborhoods.
- If the weather is poor on Day 4, swap the Princes' Islands with the Istanbul Archaeology Museums complex near Topkapi (three separate museums, $12 entry, covered). Reschedule the island trip to Day 5 if the forecast clears.
